What is Tallow?
Tallow, or rendered beef fat, is the
a byproduct of slowly melting leaf fat until it is a shelf-stable liquid that is solid when cooled. It requires a particular cut of fat from around the kidneys and major organs of the animal known as leaf fat. Leaf fat is mainly composed of triglycerides (fatty acids) that are nearly identical to the human skin. The fat from around the muscle tissue does not have the same composition and does not render into a lovely hard tallow. -
Why Tallow?
Tallow is a superfood for our skin! It has been used for hundreds of years to heal and soothe. Its biological composition is nearly identical to the makeup of our own skin making it the perfect choice for soothing & moisturizing. Plants sources do not contain all of the beneficial vitamins & minerals that tallow does making it far superior in its nutrient content. What if I also told you that it is also repurposing? Yes, you read that right. Beef fat is a byproduct of the cattle industry. Leaf fat is typically not desired & it is at the butcher's discretion if it is thrown away or sold. Simply Pioneer fills that gap and ensures that all parts of the animal are being used. It is very empowering to be filling that
gap in my own community by harvesting fat from animals born and raised in Gratiot County, Michigan. How neat is that! -

Tallow Cream FAQ

Caring for Your Tallow
You bought the cream. Now what? Tallow cream is considered an "anhydrous cream" meaning it doesn't need any preservatives or stabilizers making it 100% natural. With that being said, exposing the cream to heat, light, or moisture can cause it to go rancid (grow bacteria). No one wants their cream to go rancid, so here are our tips on "caring for your tallow"
- 1. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light and heat. You can choose to keep it in the fridge and it will keep longer, but it is not necessary.
- 2. Always wash and dry hands
before placing fingers in the tallow cream jar. This is to avoid adding bacteria to the cream. - 3. Before each use, be sure to look at the cream for any signs of mold & also briefly smell the cream to ensure there is no rancid smell.
- 4. There is a BEST BY date on every jar, however, the cream is still able to be used up to a year if it has been properly cared for. Be sure to check for mold and rancidity if it is after BEST BY date and discard if necessary.
- 4. Be sure to check your
mailbox for the cream to prevent it from melting in extreme heat. When tallow cream is allowed to reharden after melting on its own, it is unpredictable on how it will reharden.

Tallow Cream Smell
The question everyone wants to know: Will I smell like a steak? The answer is no. Tallow has a very slight tallow smell to it that is distinguishable. Some people love it, others not so much. The rendering process that we use purifies the tallow removing most of the smell. If you are concerned about the smell, try our scented version or add your own essential oils to an unscented jar (at a proper safe usage rate of course)!

Tallow Cream Texture
Every single batch of tallow cream that leaves the Simply Pioneer studio is individually inspected for quality. However, every single batch varies due to temperature, ingredients, the animal, and the conditions that the animal was raised. While we do try our very best to have consistency, our tallow cream is a natural product without any preservatives or stabilizers and not everything can be controlled. Therefore, if your cream happens to have a slight grainy texture at first during application, rub between your fingers to melt it first, and then apply.
We strive to make sure this grainy texture doesn't occur, but it doesn't affect the quality of the cream. It is simply just cosmetic and is most likely due to slight melting and then rehardening.
-
How Do I Use Tallow?
Our tallow cream can be used essentially anywhere topically. Use it as a night cream on your face or even on your freshly shaven legs. The tallow cream will melt when it touches your skin and all you have to do is rub it in & enjoy the benefits.
We do not advise using it on children since it has not been tested for safety.
Our tallow soap is for external use only and is advised to be washed off after application. Work up a lather under water and apply where needed avoiding direct eye contact. Rinse off. We recommend doing a small patch test before application on entire body.
-
Is it Greasy?
This question always makes me chuckle! It is, in fact, beef fat. Therefore, it is a "greasy" cream upon application. Our formulation contains shea butter to cut down on the oily effect allowing it to be easily absorbed into the skin. If you are not used to wearing oil-based creams, this cream might feel thick to you at first. However, using a thick oil-based cream as such is very beneficial. We recommend using it for a week to get used to it or simply only wearing it at night if you do not enjoy the thicker consistency.
-
Does it clog pores?
While every single person's body & skin is unique, tallow does not clog pores. In fact, its composition allows it to easily be absorbed into human skin due to it being biologically similar. So lather up. Face and all without worrying about clogged pores.
-
Can it be used as a sunscreen?
No! We do not advise wearing our tallow cream in direct sunlight. We have not tested the effects of our tallow cream as a sun barrier and advise that you don't try it. After all, it is beef fat.
-
Is it really 100% natural?
Yes! Say goodbye to worrying about chemicals in your personal care products! We pride ourselves in supplying 100% natural tallow products to customers so you don't have to worry about any of that "nasty" stuff. There are no preservatives, stabilizers, dyes, or synthetic fragrances in any of our tallow products.

Uh Oh! My Tallow Cream Melted
There are a few different scenarios as to why this happened.
One being that it was not stored properly. If it is slightly melted, simply fully melt the cream in a oven-safe container up to 175 degrees F (this will be very hot so be careful) and then place it in the fridge to firm up. Once it is firm, either use as is, or use a mixer to whip air into it. Be aware that this melting may potentially cause the re-hardened version to be slightly grainy. The grainy texture is only cosmetic and does not affect the quality. Simply allow the cream to fully melt on the tips of your fingers before application. If you purchased a scented cream and decide to melt it down, the essential oils will evaporate off and you may have to add more.
Be sure that you monitor your tallow cream for mold or rancidity after it has melted. The heat provides an environment for bacteria to grow. Discontinue use and throw the product away if this occurs.
The other reason was that the shipping circumstances were too warm and caused melting. If this is the case, contact us. We will make this right.

Shipping
Due to the sensitivity to temperature, we only ship tallow creams on Mondays and Tuesdays. We also ship with dry ice to ensure the cream stays cool and does not melt. We would hate for you to receive a melted cream!
Tallow Soap FAQ
-
Why Tallow Soap?
Tallow is not only a wonderful product for topical application, it also works wonders as a wash-off product too! Tallow's properties allows it to be used as the only ingredient in our soap besides water. It makes a nice hard bar that will last a long time if properly stored.
Some of our luxury soap bars contain other ingredients that compliment tallow such as shea butter, olive oil, castor oil, coconut oil or even sweet almond oil.
-
Does tallow soap contain lye?
The answer is yes and no. If you are unfamiliar with soap making, in a nutshell, the lye (sodium hydroxide) is what turns the tallow into soap. Therefore, a proper formulation will have no lye left in the final product. Lye, a very alkaline solution, initiates a process called "saponification" which is the process of turning oil to soap. It is impossible to make soap without using lye!
We use the cold process method of soap making which requires all soaps to be cured for at least 4 weeks to ensure the soaps are "cured" or 100% saponified. We take safety very seriously. There is no lye left in your bar of tallow soap!
-
Caring for Tallow Soap
We recommend using a hot knife (warmed up with hot water) to cut the soap into quarters. Only use one quarter at a time and keep it out of standing water. This will allow your soap to last a long time!

Different Kinds of Soaps at Simply Pioneer
Most of our tallow soaps are 100% pure tallow with no other oils added. However, we do offer a luxury line that contains other complimentary oils.
Our signature unscented soap is the only one with just tallow and nothing else. The rest of our soaps contain things such as essential oils, natural colorants like clays, fruit & vegetable powders, and even oil infusions with fresh herbs. Every bar is carefully formulated with your skin in mind. It is safe to say that our soap is one-of-a-kind!

My Tallow Soap isn't Super Sudsy
100% pure tallow soap doesn't make a sudsy bar of soap like commercial bar of soap does. Tallow makes more of a creamy lather which is great for the face!
If you prefer a luxurious lather with lots of bubbles, try one of our luxury bars. They contain other oils that give that sudsy effect. Tallow in itself simply doesn't have that quality.
